This is why Chico runners are the tightest team around. This is what you want from a team- of course running fast is important, but more important is being part of a tight, supportive team, and even more important than that is to have, when you're done, a set of memories that are among the sweetest in your life, and most important of all is to have, when you're done, to have the true, close friends that you will keep for the rest of your life. That's why, when you go to the track, Chico runners run faster than their talent should let them- because they have trained for the long term, and because they have a crew of homeboys and homegirls on the side of the track cheering them harder than other teams cheer their teammates. Gary has created a culture there that is more positive than any coach I know.

We are very pleased that our son chose Chico. Gary's approach sounds like the Athlete-Centered Coaching advocated in "Take the Lead" by Scott Simmons (5 time NAIA CC Coach of the year) and Will Freeman.

If you think Chico doesn't get talent, then you don't know what you are talking about, and you don't do your homework.

It's not hard. Get all the 9:30 / 15:45 woodward guys you can get and see who survives (who are supposedly not good but really are). the luxury of having 30 guys on a roster. Once the ball is rolling ... just have to keep it rolling.

Every kid coming out of High School needs a coach like this guy and we would have a larger pool of distance runners to choose from at the next level.
