Robby Andrews Out Of Nowhere!
Race: USATF 1,500m National Championship
Gap: 10m back with 80m to go
Kicker: Robby Andrews (adidas)
Recipient: Ben Blankenship (Nike) & Leo Manzano (Hoka One One)
The day before the USATF Championship Men’s 1500m final I ran into Robby Andrews’ coach Jason Vigilante. Near the end of the conversation, Andrews’ upcoming race came up and I asked Coach Vigilante what his expectations were. Like most coaches, he was optimistic and just hoping for a good race. However, one thing he said was that he had seen some ‘unreal’ 100m splits in Andrews’ workouts. At the time I thought nothing of it. Sure Andrews can run a fast 100m, but how would 100m speed put him over the top? And then 24 hours later after watching his last 100m I thought, “Damn, coach was right.”
