The 23-year-old mega talent from South Africa, who won the 400m World title last summer in Beijing in a blistering 43.48 (#4 all-time), today entered uncharted territory with his 9.98 100m Bloemfontein, South Africa.

That’s good enough to make Michael Johnson— the best 200m/400m runner in history— blush.


van Niekerk still has much work to do to reach MJ’s level (3 Olympic golds, 6 ind. World titles), but hey, it’s gotta be pretty cool to say you’ve done something that not even the uber-rangy Johnson could accomplish.

van Niekerk’s PRs: 9.98, 19.94, 43.48. Unofficially, this makes van Niekerk the Mo Farah of sprinting.
