NAIA Star Sam Atkin Kicks Down Edward Cheserek

King Cheserek was dethroned for the second time this season when Sam Atkin of Lewis-Clark State College threw down a massive kick to claim the 3K victory at Oregon Twilight. Atkin passed Cheserek on the homestretch in Eugene to win the 3K in 7:56.70.

As Ken Goe of Oregon Live pointed out, Cheserek alluded to minor injury problems early in the spring and has since struggled to regain the same form that carried him to 13 NCAA titles. For Atkin, the race was a huge breakthrough. The NAIA star is the only athlete to break 14 minutes for the 5K in the entire division and now owns a 13-second improvement on his previous 3K PR.

“The last two laps I was feeling really good,” Atkin told Goe. “I thought, ‘Why not, let’s go for it? I’ve got nothing to lose.’ Edward Cheserek is THE distance runner. I know he’s not on form right now, but I did my best to keep with him.”

Katie Rainsberger Takes Down Pros, Runs 4:14 at Oregon Twilight

The high school senior proved yet again that she is race wise beyond her years when she walked away with a runner-up finish in the Oregon Twilight 1500m. The Oregon commit finished second to Nike Oregon Project’s Treniere Moser with a finishing time of 4:14.20, less than a second behind Moser. Not only did she run a three-second personal best in the distance, but she took down seasoned pros Jordan Hasay, Mel Lawrence and Alexi Pappas in the process.

Brandon McGorty, Drew Hunter, Alex Lomong Lead Deepest High School 800m Ever

The high school phenom trio carried each other to one of the greatest prep 800m performances in history at Dogwood Classic. Led by an early surge by Brandon McGorty, the group came through the 400m in 52 seconds and the 600m in sub-1:20. Meanwhile, Lomong sat in second and Hunter in third. Rounding the final turn, Hunter and Lomong closed the gap in a nail-biter finish which resulted in a lean at the line.

McGorty edged out Hunter with a winning time of 1:48.58. Hunter finished second in 1:48.64 and Lomong third in 1:48.67. The performances stand at No. 1, 2, and 3 in the nation.

Aaron Fletcher Emerges in Steeplechase With Sixth-Fastest NCAA Mark

The BYU senior threw down a courageous performance at the Oxy Invitational when he rode the train of the Olympic standard attempt. Fletcher ran alongside former Eastern Kentucky All American Ole Hesselbjerg who was chasing the elusive mark of 8:30.00. Although Hesselbjerg finished six seconds off the mark, he helped lead Fletcher to an eight-second PR of 8:39.10. The performance now stands as the sixth-fastest mark run by an NCAA athlete this season.
