Since the 1930s, the tradition of having your photo on the front of a Wheaties box has been a sign of athletic accomplishment. The former Yankee baseball player Lou Gherig was the first athlete to appear on the box of "The Breakfast of Champions," and a long line of famous sports (and non-athlete) endorsees followed.
Given the history, it may come as a surprise that track and field legend Edwin Moses has never been featured on a Wheaties box! Moses won gold medals in the 400m hurdles at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics. From the year 1977 to 1987, Moses won 107 consecutive finals and set four world records before finally being defeated on June 4, 1987, by fellow American hurdler Danny Harris.
Moses' omission is finally being recitified, however. This month, Wheaties will release a new cereal box featuring the legend, and Moses said it's still an honor despite the long wait.
"I think getting the honor now actually means more," Moses said. "I think when you’re competing and you’re young, you kind of just take it for granted that of course if you win a gold medal you might have the incredible honor of being on a Wheaties box.”
Moses, a member of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, has done illustrious things since the end of his athletic career. He has been a driving force in the world of sports drug testing, and designed the world's first random out-of-competition testing program for amateur athletes. Now, 40 years after winning his first gold medal, Moses is finally receiving the pop culture recognition he should have been afforded four decades ago.
“To even be listed with the incredible athletes that have been on the Wheaties box, and to be a part of this great legacy … for me to be on a Wheaties box with these incredible legends that have already graced the front of your boxes. It’s truly an honor and I honestly can’t think of anything that makes me more excited.”
