Eleven Russian track and field athletes reportedly tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs when their samples from the 2008 Olympics were retested, according to the Associated Press. The most prominent among them is 2012 Olympic high jump gold medalist Anna Chicherova, who took bronze at the Beijing Olympics. The names were leaked by Match TV, a Russian state sports channel, and will not be confirmed or denied by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) until "B" samples are tested in July.
Four other 2008 medalists—Yekaterina Volkova (women's steeplechase, bronze), Denis Alexeyev (men's 4x400m, bronze), Tatiana Firova (women's 4x400m, silver), Anastasia Kapchinskaya (women's 4x400m, silver), Julia Chermoshaskaya (women's 4x100m, gold), and Maria Abakumova (women's javelin, silver)—were also named in the report.
The Russian Olympic Committee confirmed it received a list of athletes with positive results, but said it would not release the names until "B'' samples corroborate or deny the findings. The IOC stores samples for 10 years and retests them as newer methods become available.
Americans possibly eligible for upgraded medals include Brigetta Barrett, who took silver behind Chicherova in London.
The news comes as the IOC and IAAF weigh the possibility of banning all Russian athletes from this summer's Rio Olympics for general state-sponsored doping chicanery. Pole vault world champion and Olympic gold medalist Yelena Isinbayeva has threatened to sue if such a ban were enacted, claiming that it would violate her human rights.
