Running completely alone at the Paris Diamond League, Ruth Jebet of Bahrain utterly destroyed the old world record in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase. The old WR was 8:58.81; Jebet ran 8:52.78 today.

The 19-year-old most recently won an Olympic gold medal in the event in Rio.

American Emma Coburn was third in the race, and Stephanie Garcia and Colleen Quigley became the fourth and fifth fastest Americans of all time.

Jebet paced herself steadily. Her three 1000m splits were 2:56, 2:57, 2:58.
