FloTrack vs. The Coaches: The Teams We Disagreed On Most
We finished our ranking of the top 31 men's and women's cross country teams in Division I on Monday, and the USTFCCCA released its coaches' polls yesterday. There were major differences all through the rankings, starting at the very top.

The No. 1 Teams

FloTrack's No. 1, coaches' No. 4: Stanford men
FloTrack's No. 2, coaches' No. 1: Syracuse men

FloTrack's No. 1, coaches' No. 2: Colorado women
FloTrack's No. 5, coaches' No. 1: New Mexico women

One coach voted for Colorado's women to be the top team. None of the coaches voted for the Stanford men, though one did vote for Oregon. This is why we ranked the Stanford men No. 1. As for the women, we agreed with head coach Mark Wetmore, who said this year's Colorado women's team might be his best ever.

Major beefs in the top 10

FloTrack's No. 7, coaches' No. 12: Iona men
FloTrack's No. 9, coaches' No. 3: Northern Arizona men
FloTrack's No. 10, coaches' No. 25: Colorado State men

Neither Northern Arizona nor Colorado State made it to nationals last fall, and the discrepancies here are the most profound between the FloTrack rankings and the USTFCCCA poll.

FloTrack's No. 4, coaches' No. 9: Michigan women
FloTrack's No. 10, coaches' No. 6: Boise State women

Big differences elsewhere

FloTrack's No. 13, coaches' No. 22: Mississippi men
FloTrack's No. 15, coaches' No. 8: Washington men
FloTrack's No. 21, coaches' No. 13: UTEP men
FloTrack's No. 22, coaches' No. 11: Oklahoma State men
FloTrack's No. 24, coaches' NR: Washington State men
FloTrack's No. 26, coaches' NR: Villanova men
FloTrack's NR, coaches' No. 21: Providence men

Honestly, there isn't that much of a difference in the quality of men's teams at this level. Twelfth and 22nd place at nationals were separated by 74 points last year. Twelfth-place BYU's runners averaged 31:00, while 22nd-place Virginia's averaged 31:11. Those 10 places were roughly separated by one second per runner per mile. So it's not too surprising that two different attempts to rank them would end up with wildly different results.

FloTrack's No. 13, coaches' No. 25: Harvard women
FloTrack's No. 16, coaches' No. 23: Princeton women
FloTrack's No. 23, coaches' NR: California women
FloTrack's No. 24, coaches' NR/no votes: North Carolina women
FloTrack's NR, coaches' No. 24: Penn women

FloTrack and the coaches see the Ivy League very differently here. We have the Harvard women at No. 13, while the coaches have Princeton and Penn ahead of them in the national rankings.

We also ranked UNC No. 24, but they weren't among the 44 teams to get votes in the coaches' poll.
