The IAAF World Athlete Of The Year Nominees Are Out
Usain Bolt, Ashton Eaton, and Kendra Harrison are among the 2016 IAAF World Athlete of the Year nominees.
The IAAF announced its nominees for the men's and women's World Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, and there were no obvious snubs.
Usain Bolt (100m/200m), Thiago Braz da Silva (pole vault), Ashton Eaton (decathlon), Mo Farah (10K/5K), Eliud Kipchoge (marathon), Conseslus Kipruto (steeplechase), Omar McLeod (110m hurdles), David Rudisha (800m), Christian Taylor (triple jump), and Wayde van Niekerk (400m) are the men's nominees. All won their events at the Olympics and van Niekerk broke the 400m world record in Rio.
Almaz Ayana (10K/5K), Ruth Beitia (high jump), Vivian Cheruiyot (10K/5K), Kendra Harrison (100m hurdles), Caterine Ibarguen (triple jump), Ruth Jebet (steeplechase), Sandra Perkovic (discus), Caster Semenya (800m), Elaine Thompson (100m/200m), and Anita Wlodarczyk (hammer) are the women's nominees. Ayana and Cheruiyot split the 10K and 5K, respectively, in Rio, while Harrison didn't make it out of the U.S. Olympic Trials. The rest won their events at the Olympics.
Ayana (10K), Harrison, Jebet, and Wlodarczyk broke world records in their events this summer.
Eaton, Taylor, and Harrison were the only Americans nominated. The IAAF will whittle the fields down to three athletes each on November 1, and public voting will count for 25 percent. I'd say the men's final three should be Bolt, van Niekerk, and any one of the others and the women's should be Ayana, Wlodarczyk, and Thompson. But the women's finalists aren't as clear cut as the men--no matter which three they pick, at least one 2016 world record breaker won't make the final three.
