A Complete Statistical Breakdown Of The Marathon Before Dubai
Courtesy of statistician K Ken Nakamura, we have a full breakdown of recent marathon history leading up to Thursday night's Dubai Marathon, which will be live on FloTrack at 9:20 PM Eastern. Kenenisa Bekele, who ran 2:03:03 in September, will be attempting to break the 2:02:57 world record.

A few nuggets:

-There have been 14 sub-2:05 performances at Dubai.

-Ethiopian men have swept the top three spots at each of the last five Dubai marathons.

-Ayele Abshero has the Dubai course record at 2:04:23

-The race has gone through halfway in 61:36, 62:02, and 61:37 the last three years. Bekele plans on going through 13.1 miles in 61:00.

-Bekele's 61:11 halfway split in Berlin is the fastest ever. Dennis Kimetto went through halfway in 61:45 in his world record.

-Outside of the wind-aided 2011 Boston Marathon, the fastest second half of a marathon came in Kimetto's WR, when he ran 61:12. Interestingly, the second fastest second half is from Ronald Da Costa in Berlin in 1998.

-Dubai's 2:04:23 is the 6th fastest course record, behind Berlin, Boston, London, Frankfurt, and Chicago.

-Its 2:04:40 top 10 average is tied for third behind Berlin and London.

-The fastest ever marathon by athletes of 18, 19, 21, 23, and 24 years of age all came in Dubai.

-Bekele is 34; no one 31 or older has run as fast as his 2:03:03.

-If Bekele breaks 2:04, he'll become only the fourth man ever to have broke 2:04 more than once.

-The 2002 Chicago Marathon is the fastest ever combined men's and women's race at 4:23:14 from Paula Radcliffe and Khalid Khannouchi. The Dubai women's race has gone 2:19 and 2:20 the last two years, so if Bekele runs 2:03 or faster, it could also be the fastest combined marathon ever.

-The ten fastest women's performances at Dubai average 2:20:05, which is No. 3 in the world.
