Fred Kerley Almost Broke The Collegiate Record At SECs
Texas A&M's Fred Kerley ran the second-fastest 400m in NCAA history in the prelims at the SEC Championships
Texas A&M's Fred Kerley ran 44.09, the second-fastest collegiate 400m of all-time, in the preliminary round at the SEC Championships. He slowed over the last few steps and appeared to walk across the line, meaning he has plenty left in the tank for the final on Saturday afternoon. Right now, the NCAA record stands at 44.0, as set by Quincy Watt of USC in 1992.
Watch the epic run below:
Kerley's mark is a new SEC record, improving on LSU's Derrick Brew's 44.29 from 1999, and a new Texas A&M school record, bettering Deon Lendore's 44.36 from 2014.
"I still have to produce tomorrow, that is the one that will count," Kerley said after the race. "The race felt very smooth. Now, I just need to prepare for tomorrow's final."
