Big 12 Championship Recap: Kansas State, Texas Claim Conference Titles
The final day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship was a competition of upsets and redemption. The women's team race ended with an exciting battle between Kansas State and Texas. After the women's 5K, the second to last event of the day, Kansas State clinch
The final day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship was a competition of upsets and redemption. The women's team race ended with an exciting battle between Kansas State and Texas. After the women's 5K, the second to last event of the day, Kansas State clinched the victory over the Longhorns with 133 points. Texas trailed for second in 128.5 points and Baylor surged ahead of Oklahoma for third-place with 123 points. Kansas State's performance marked the first team victory for the Wildcats since 2002 and ended the Longhorns' three-year streak of conference victories. The Wildcats accomplished the victory with stunning performances during the first and second day of the championship where crucial points were earned in the hammer throw, heptathlon, long jump, and javelin.
The men's competition was dominated by the Texas Longhorns who claimed the team title with 153.5 total points, 10.5 points ahead of runner-up Kansas. Texas Tech followed for third with 110 points. The Longhorns' performance marks the program's third consecutive Big 12 team title.
Women's 4x100m
In a dramatic start to the final day of conference championship action, Oklahoma stormed to victory in the women's 4x100m. The performance was an upset over the field, which included No. 27-ranked Texas. The Sooners won the relay in 44.77. They were followed by Kansas State in second and Texas in third.
Men's 4x100m
The Texas Longhorns stormed to victory to kick off the running events on the final day of the Big 12 Championship. The team of O'Brien Wasome, Aldrich Bailey Jr., Charles Anumnu, and Senoj-Jay Givans won the relay in 39.66 over Baylor's 39.75 performance.
Women's 1500m
In a tactical women's 1500m race, Kaela Edwards asserted herself with a dominant kick to win her first ever Big 12 outdoor 1500m title of her career. Edwards, who won the NCAA indoor mile crown last year, beat the field with a surge in the final lap and crossed the finish line in 4:33, three seconds ahead of Baylor's Maggie Montoya.
Men's 1500m
Josh Thompson won the men's 1500m for his mother on Mother's Day. After winning the 1500m in 4:08, the Oklahoma State All-American told FloTrack that he was born on Mother's Day and made the decision to race on Sunday for his mom. Thompson is a member of the Mormon church and doesn't usually race on Sundays, but made the decision to race with the goal to win for his mother.
Women's 100m Hurdles
NCAA leader Rushelle Burton showed exactly why she is the top hurdler in the country. The Texas freshman claimed her first Big 12 outdoor crown in a stunning 12.70 winning time, which is just 0.05 seconds slower than her NCAA leading mark of 12.65.
Men's 110m Hurdles
After Burton's victory for the Longhorns, Spencer Dunkerley-Offor followed with yet another win for Texas. The senior ran 13.45 to win the men's 110m hurdles. The performance meant a lot to the upperclassman who returned from battling injuries last year.
Women's 400m
Chrisann Gordon took care of business in the women's 400m. The Texas Longhorn won the final in 51.40 despite a heavy headwind. The performance marks Gordon's first Big 12 outdoor 400m victory of her career. She was followed by teammates Zola Golden in second and Serenity Douglas in seventh.
Men's 400m
The Baylor Bears dominated the men's 400m with stellar performances from Wil London and George Caddick who finished 1-2 in the final. Just a sophomore, London ran 45.72 to defend his Big 12 400m crown. He was followed by his teammate Caddick who closed for 46.13 in second-place.
Women's 100m
Teahna Daniels captured her first Big 12 outdoor 100m title on Sunday with a blazing 11.12 winning time. The NCAA champion in the 60m faced a strong 3.0 tailwind and contributed crucial points for the Longhorns' title chase.
Men's 100m
In one of the tightest finishes of the day, Jalen Miller out-leaned the competition to claim the 100m victory for Texas Christian University. Miller took advantage of the 5.3 tailwind to cross the line in 10.03. Texas' Senoj-Jay Givens followed for second in 10.03 and Maxwell Willis of Baylor closed for third in 10.04.
Miller's victory followed a disappointing performance as a member of the 4x100m relay that finished eighth earlier in the competition. His 100m performance proved to be an act of redemption for the Horned Frog.
Women's 800m
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls dominated the field in the women's 800m with big kicks from Savannah Camacho and Kaylee Dodd. Camacho flew through the finish line in 2:09.44 and was followed by her teammate in 2:09.68. Following the men's 1500m, the women's 800m performances marked the second 1-2 sweep for Oklahoma State in the middle distance events.
Men's 800m
Strymar Livingston lit up the home crowd with a victory in the men's 800m. The Kansas Jayhawk ran 1:48 to win his first Big 12 conference championship.
Behind Livingston, No. 10-ranked Charles Jones and No. 22-ranked Jaymes Dennison pulled up with injury on the final lap of the race. In an admirable display of sportsmanship, Dennison helped Jones across the finish line. Jones finished seventh and Dennison finished eighth overall.
Women's 400m Hurdles
Texas junior Ariel Jones accomplished the Big 12 400m hurdles three-peat by winning the competition in 57.75. She was followed by Kiana Hawn of Baylor and Ranae McKenzie of Kansas State. McKenzie's third-place performance was a significant contribution to the Kansas State team title chase. At this point in the championship, Kansas State led the women's team score over Texas by just a few points.
Men's 400m Hurdles
In an effortless 49.98 performance, 2016 Olympian Byron Robinson claimed the 400m hurdles conference title. Last summer, Robinson made his first Olympic team when he finished second at the Olympic Trials. He went on to compete in the semifinal of the Olympic Games where he posted a personal best of 48.65.
Women's 200m
Taylor Bennett returned to redeem herself after false-starting in the 100m preliminary round on Saturday. The Baylor Bear stormed to victory in the women's 200m with a winning time of 22.47. The performance is a personal best for the sprint standout.
The 200m also marked a big change-up in the team title projections as the Texas duo of Teahna Daniels and Zola Golden both tied for third to beat Kansas State's A'Keyla Mitchell. The Longhorns' performances brought the team within a half point of the leading Kansas State squad in the team title projections.
Men's 200m
A freshman battled a senior to the line to win the men's 200m crown. Maxwell Willis of Baylor beat defending champion Aldrich Bailey Jr. to claim his first Big 12 outdoor crown. Willis ran a wind-aided 20.10 to win the sprint.
Women's 5K
After clinching the victory in the women's 10K earlier in the championship, Kansas' Sharon Lokedi returned to claim the win in the 5K. After a brisk early pace set by TCU's Brenley Goertzen, Lokedi ran on her heels for much of the race and pulled away with three laps remaining. Lokedi finished first in 16:15 while the Baylor duo of Maggie Montoya and Lindsey Bradley finished in second and third. Goertzen held on for fourth overall.
Men's 5K
Texas Tech's Benard Keter claimed his second individual victory of the meet by clinching the 5K victory in 14:11. Keter closed in a blazing 57-second last lap to beat Oklahoma's Dylan Blankenbaker. On Saturday, Keter won the steeplechase in 8:49, one second ahead of Oklahoma State's Joshua Thompson who closed in 8:50.
Women's 4x400m
With a stunning anchor leg by Zola Golden, who split 50.47 unofficially, the Texas women closed out the meet with another individual victory in the 4x400m relay. The Longhorns claimed the 4x400m win in 3:29.13, well ahead of runner-up Baylor and third-place team finisher Oklahoma.
Men's 4x400m
The men's 4x400m was dominated by stellar performances from the Baylor Bears. Highlighted by a 44.6 unofficial split from 400m champion Will London on the second leg, Baylor won the relay in 3:04.60 over Texas Tech who finished second in 3:05.40.
