Ryan Crouser Wins Shot Put With The Longest Throw In The World Since 2003
Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser won his second straight U.S. title in the men's shot put in dramatic fashion today, launching the shot 22.65 meters (74-3¾) on his final throw. Joe Kovacs had overtaken Crouser on his final throw, and Crouser responded with the the longest throw on the planet in the last 14 years. Crouser is now the seventh best performer in world history.
It's the second straight USATF outdoor title for Crouser, who also beat Joe Kovacs for the win at the Olympic Trials. Kovacs already had a bye to London as the defending world champion.
Crouser and Kovacs took gold and silver at the Olympic Games last summer, and have an excellent chance to do at worlds later this summer. Earlier this year, Kovacs threw 22.57 meters--at the time the best throw since 2003. Now Crouser has beaten that mark.
Correction: This post initially stated that Crouser's mark was the best since 1989. Track & Field News does not list Kevin Toth's 2003 mark because of a doping ban that Toth later served. We regret the error.
