SO Lachlan Cook (3:47 1500; 13:58 5K; 29:18 10K; 103rd at '16 NCAA XC)

Conal Wilson via New Zealand (4:20 Mile; 8:37 3K; 14:56 5K; 1st at '15 NZ H.S. XC)

Analysis:

A young University of Virginia team is led by redshirt junior Brent Demarest, the top scorer for the Cavaliers at NCAAs in 2016 with a 42nd-place finish, just outside of All-American honors.

Behind Demarest, who went on to compete at the NCAA East prelims in both the 5K and 10K, UVA loses just Zach Herriot to graduation from the scorers that placed 18th as a team last year in Terre Haute.

Chase Weaverling, whose career-best finish at NCAA XC was 55th as a sophomore in 2015, will be the lone senior on the team. Both he and true sophomore Lachlan Cook have run under 14 minutes for 5K and 29:30 for 10K and will fill out the top three. Redshirt sophomores Alex Corbett and Matthew Novak, both of whom are sub-14:20 performers for 5K, will likely round out the top five scorers.

New faces for the Cavaliers include Conal Wilson, a New Zealand national cross country champion; University of Texas transfer Spencer Dodds, whose 167th place finish at NCAA XC would have made him UVA's No. 4 scorer last year; and Rohann Asfaw, a multiple-time state champion in Maryland.
