Olympic high jumper Inika McPherson lives and trains in Beaumont, Texas, one of the cities hit hardest by Hurricane Harvey at the end of August. The 31-year-old, who placed ninth in the world this year at the IAAF World Championships in London, started a fundraising campaign via AthleteBiz to aid her family in this difficult time. She wrote the following of her campaign:

First, I'd like to say thank you and I hope all families that were involved in the recent events due to Hurricane Harvey are doing well.

Because I travel around the world for high jump, it's almost impossible for me to get/keep a normal job. All of my money comes from sporting events which is not much since I do not have a sponsor. Because of Hurricane Harvey I lost a lot of clothing, equipment, and literally the place I rest my head. I am now in the process of having to move and start over.

After the house flooded, the hurricane has left me in devastating times, which were already hard enough. I have high hopes that this fundraiser will help me relocate, repurchase equipment/clothing needed for training, and hopefully get me back on the road in a vehicle to and from practice.

I understand that in order to compete at the elite level one must make sacrifices, and this I have done throughout my entire career, but with the help of a few I believe I can rebuild and keep growing as an athlete and person.
