One of the nation's top talents has announced his college choice.
Hamilton Southeastern (IN) High senior Gabe Fendel, ranked No. 4 in the Flo50 national rankings and No. 2 in the FloTrack Distance Class of 2018 Ranking, pledged his commitment to the University of Colorado, a program led by legendary coach Mark Wetmore.
Fendel is a treasured recruit who boasts significant range from cross country to the track, where he has blazed to times of 1:54/4:04/8:50.56 in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m.
Fendel captured an effort of 4:07.46 in the full mile at Brooks PR and has also gone 8:58.35 in the 2-mile indoors. He won his first Indiana High School Athletic Association state title in the 1600m this past year.
Fendel finished 12th at Foot Locker Nationals last year and was 28th at NXN.
In Indiana, he's also currently forging a path toward a state title and leads the state with a 5K PB of 15:05.88 this season. His career PR came at semi-state last October with a mark of 14:47.00.
Fendel, who attended the Nike Elite camp this offseason, also owns a 3-mile PR of 14:30 at Detweiller Park.
Wetmore has been the head coach of Colorado, which finished sixth at last year's NCAA cross country championships, for the past 23 years and has been with the program for 26 years. His programs have won seven cross country titles since 2000.
Wetmore's leadership has landed countless All-Americans, NCAA champions, and future pros.
