Depending on who you ask, Beatrice Chebet could have just run the fastest-ever 3000m in world history.

At the 2025 Rabat Diamond League, the 5000m and 10,000m Olympic champ Chebet was a clear favorite in the women's 3000m. But few would have expected such a dominant performance early on.

The race featured a star-studded pacing team of Winnie Nanyondo and Georgia Griffith. They led the field running consistent 65-second 400ms, and by 1400m it was Chebet all alone as her closest competition Ejgayehu Taye had fallen back.

Chebet passed 1800m in around 4:57, and the aggressive pacing lights seemed to be slipping away around 6 minutes into the race. But Chebet, now racing only against herself, wouldn't let them get away from her.

She began a mad dash for the finish and passed the bell in around 7:09. With a last lap around 62 seconds, she finished in an incredible 8:11.56 final time.

The mark is, according to World Athletics, the second-fastest 3K of all-time. But the top spot -- an 8:06.11 in 1993 -- was set by Wang Junxia, part of the controversial "Ma's army" squad of Chinese athletes that was revealed to have participated in doping in a 2016 letter by one of the athletes.

Track and Field News does not recognize Junxia's mark, which would make Chebet's time today the fastest women's 3000m ever run. It bodes well for her chances in Tokyo and even her bid to become the World Athletics Athlete of the Year.
