Rome Diamond League 5000m Will Be Crucial To American Contenders
Rome Diamond League 5000m Will Be Crucial To American Contenders
The Rome Diamond League 5000m will be an important test for the Americans on June 6th.

The Rome Diamond League 5000m race, scheduled for June 6, could prove to be an ever-important race for Americans hoping to make a world team later this year.
Three Americans will take the start; Shelby Houlihan, Karissa Schweizer and Josette Andrews. They'll be up against one of the best fields we've seen this year.

Four women from last year's Olympic 5K Final will be in the field; Gold Medalist Beatrice Chebet, Nadia Battocletti (4th), Gudaf Tsegay (9th) and Karissa Schweizer (10th). By all accounts, the field will be world class in Rome with six women who have run 14:32 or faster -- Schweizer and Houlihan are two of those women.
So Why Is It Crucial For The Americans?
The three Americans each have a unique story, and yet, they'll all be competing for the same World Team come the US Championships in August.
Let's start with Schweizer
She was third at the US Olympic Trials in 2024 in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. Then in Paris, she finished 10th in the 5,000m and 9th in the 10,000m.
The open to her 2025 season has been a little lackluster. She finished third in the Mile at the Drake Relays (4:25.27) on April 26th and then at the Oregon Twilight meet on May 9th she ran 4:06.01 for third in the 1,500m. Those are certainly not poor performances, but we also haven't seen her open in her specialty events.
For Schweizer, Rome is the perfect opportunity to jumpstart her season. With the caliber of field, we'd expect the pace to be well in the 14:20's or faster. Schweizer ran her personal best of 14:26 back in 2020, but she posted a 14:36 at the end of the last season.
Her road to yet another World Championship team starts in Rome.
Houlihan Will Race Her First 5,000m Since Her 2020 American Record
Since serving her four year ban from the sport, Shelby Houlihan has returned in a big way.
To cap the indoor season, she earned a silver medal over 3,000m at the US Indoor Championships. At the Indoor World Championships in Nanjing, Houlihan earned a silver medal in that same event.
Her return has been nothing short of phenomenal, compiling times of 4:03.40 (1500m), 4:20.30 (Mile), and 8:31.56 (3,000m).
Yet, outside of the World Championship, she hasn't raced on a stage as big as the Diamond League and she hasn't run a 5,000m -- despite previously holding the American Record of 14:23.92.
At the age of 32, she may be in prime shape for a fast 5,000m and we expect her to compete for a spot on the world team in this event later this year.
Josette Andrews Is Looking To Bounce Back After 2024
Andrews unfortunately missed the Olympic Team in 2024, despite running 14:46 at the BU Terrier Classic earlier in the year.
It seems as though Andrews has found some confidence in 2025.
She opened the season with a second place finish at the Millrose Games in the 3,000m (8:29.77), and then ran a 14:44.80 5,000m at the BU Last Chance National Qualifier.
At the Penn Relays she ran a blistering 4:01.76 1,500m for the win and followed that up with a win at the US 5K Road Running Championships. Last weekend, she finished third over 3,000m at the Grand Slam Track Philly meeting.
Andrews is obviously humming with confidence and she'll need to carry that momentum throughout the year as she looks to make her first World Outdoor Championship Team.
