Erin Finn Is Sole Track Athlete Nominated For AAU James E. Sullivan Award

Michigan All-American Erin Finn is the sole track and field athlete nominated for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, which is annually bestowed to the nation's top amateur athlete across all sports.

There is a fan vote component of the selection process, and track fans can cast their vote for Finn here and also by tweeting and retweeting the hashtag #Finn4Sullivan, according to Michigan. Voting officially opened today and closes next Thursday, March 29 at 11:59 p.m. at what we are assuming is Eastern time.

Finn is a nine-time individual All-American and four-time NCAA DI runner-up who graduated from Michigan in 2017 with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and a GPA of 3.97, the highest in her major.

Even with those stellar credentials, the competition for this award is tough. Fellow nominees include Maia and Alex Shibutani, who earned bronze medals in the ice dance for Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games; and Ohio State's Kyle Snyder, the reigning world champion and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling.

A track and field athlete has not won the award since 2009, when ultramarathoner Amy Palmiero-Winters took home top honors. A total of 38 track and field athletes have won the award. View the full list of past winners here.

The award ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 3 in New York City.

The James E. Sullivan Award is named after the AAU's founder and past president; the award has been presented annually since 1930. The criteria for selection include outstanding athletic accomplishment as well as leadership, character and sportsmanship.
