    World Record Holder Rhonex Kipruto Issued Doping Charge

    Rhonex Kipruto, the 23 year-old Kenyan who holds the world record for 10 kilometers on the road, has been charged with a doping violation by the Athletics Integrity Unit.  Kipruto, who won the bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, was charged based on an abnormal reading from his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP).  The ABP "monitors a series of biological parameters through a dedicated software programme to pick up on indications of doping," reads the definition on the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) website.

    Using totally different strategies, Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan and Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum were victorious at this morning's 43rd TCS London Marathon held in cool and rainy conditions.  Hassan, the 2019 World Athletics 1500m and 10,000m champion, won in her debut at the distance with a spectacular come-from-behind performance in 2:18:33.  Kiptum, 23, who only made his marathon debut last December in Valencia, flattened a top-class field with a 59:45 second half (the fastest second half ever in a certified marathon) to win in a course record 2:01:25, the second-fastest time in history.

    In their first appearances at the United Airlines NYC Half, Hellen Obiri of Kenya and Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda scored convincing victories, winning in 1:07:21 and 1:01:31, respectively.  Despite near-freezing temperatures and significant headwinds, Obiri managed to set an event and course record, eclipsing the standard set by Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia at last year's race by 14 seconds.  Both athletes won $20,000 in prize money.
