Dillon Maggard Of Utah State Breaks Blue Jean Mile World Record In 4:11.8

Dillon Maggard figured he had a bit more in the tank after placing sixth at the NCAA DI XC Championships in Louisville on Saturday. The Utah State senior took to the track on Monday evening in an effort to break the blue jean mile world record of 4:16, set by BYU's Rory Linkletter (39th in Louisville) earlier this year. Maggard ran splits of 61/64/65/61 for a new world record of 4:11.80; you can watch the final half mile in the above video. The run is even more impressive given that the track in Logan, Utah, is about 4,800 feet above elevation.

Of his race-day attire, Maggard says he wore "100 percent cotton jeans from the local thrift store. I picked them specifically because they were tight around the waist, somewhat loose fitting, and were, of course, the most stylish. The most surprising thing about racing in jeans was that they didn't allow me to drive my knees up very high so I felt like I couldn't get my full stride. But during the attempt, I didn't notice them that much."

Maggard says that he is prouder of his sixth-place finish at NCAAs than his new world record, but is eager to set up another record attempt vs Linkletter sometime after the NCAA outdoor championships.
