USA Juniors Top 5, Day 2
June 16th, 2012 | Bloomington, IN

Day 2 of the USA Junior Outdoor Championships was a day of exciting performances as many junior champions were named in the final heats of several events.  The meet continues today but here are the top five performances from yesterday's events:

The field events were rocking and rolling on Saturday as the women's hammer throw American junior record was shattered by Shelby Ashe with an insane throw of 68.12 to easily win the event.  The old record from 2010 of 65.93 was set by Ashe and broken on Saturday by almost 3 feet.  Ashe also crushed her own USA Junior meet record of 60.76.

The women's 800 meter final proved to be a fast heat as Ajee Wilson won the race easily in a 2:04.86 followed by Danielle Aragon with a 2:05.06.  Wilson just graduated from Neptune High School in New Jersey and has signed with Florida State.  The surprise of the race was actually Claudia Francis of Oregon who finished 4th in the final with a 2:08.  Francis has had a stellar freshmen year season, finishing 3rd at the Pac-12 conference meet in a 2:05, but was unable to pull it together for the final yesterday.

The women's 100 meter hurdles was also a surprise as Brea Buchanan of UCLA was disqualfied from the final.  Buchanan was ranked 2nd going into the final yesterday behind Morgan Snow of the University of Texas but ended up being disqualified.  Buchanan also had a great freshman season, finishing 8th at the Pac-12 conference meet in May.

Donovan Robertson had a comeback day in the 400 meter hurdle final by finishing 3rd in the race with a time of 51.66 behind Eric Futch and Greg Coleman.  After not making the final in the 110 hurdles the day before, his performance in the 400 meter hurdle final proved to give him a little bit of redemption.  Robertson just graduated and plans on attending Ohio State University in the fall.

Allison Woodward
had a great day in the women's 5k final as she easily won the race in a time of 16:15, nearly breaking the USA Junior Meet record of 16:10 set in 2004.  Woodward has had a standout year as a freshman running for the University of Oregon, finishing in 6th place at the Pac-12 conference meet and earning All-American status in the 10,000 meters with her 5th place finish at the NCAA Championships.
