Lost behind the Pre Madness (Verzbicas returns, Kitur wins, and Sanchez Loses)

Just two years ago, Verzbicas was with the rest of the top guns at the Prefontaine Classic.

While all of the attention of the day was focused on the Prefontaine Classic, the Jim Bush Southern California Championships and USATF West Regional Championships took place at UCLA. Here are few notes and observations from the meet that went unnoticed:

- Two years ago, Lukas Verzbicas ran the two-mile at the Prefontaine Classic. Today, the triathlete won the men's 5,000-meter run. Verzbicas crossed the finish line in 14:51.77, which is just a slight improvement from his 14:53.49 at the Los Angeles Oxy Invitational in April. His original seed time was 14:06.00.

He was all-smiles afterwards on Twitter.

- He is wearing a top by TYR Sport Inc. The company, based in Huntington Beach, California, produces apparel for triathletes and swimmers.

- The men's 800-meter run in Eugene saw seven of the nine runners go under the 1:45 mark. Felix Kitur just missed that at UCLA with his time of 1:45.87 for the victory.Prince Mumba took second in 1:46.20. Charles Jock finished in third with 1:46.33, just a few weeks after running 1:45.01 at the Oxy High Performance Meet.

- Maggie Vessey of New Balance took the victory in 2:03.40 for the women's 800-meter run in her season debut. After not making the United States Olympic team in 2012, she continued to improve and ended her season with a 1:59.61 at the IAAF World Challenge Zagreb. In that same race, she defeated Brenda Martinez

-
Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez was defeated in the 400-meter dash by Joey Hughes, the former USC Trojan who ran 45.64 at the US Olympic Trials last year. Sanchez did not participate in the men's 400-meter hurdles, which was won by Kenneth Medewood of Belize in 50.92.

- And yes, the 100-meter jump rope dash continues to rise in fame. Armando Macias took the victory in 12.90. There was a preliminary round and a finals to this event.
