Shalane Flanagan took the victory in the women’s 10,000-meter final at the U.S. Outdoor Championships on Thursday night, but the surge of Jordan Hasay and Tara Erdmann stole the show for the next two spots.

The duo has until July 20 to chase the IAAF World “A” standard. In their post race interview, they discussed the possibility of racing in a co-ed 10,000-meter race in Portland.

The biggest surprise was Kara Goucher fell victim to the Des Moines heat and finished fifth. She still has a slim chance of making the national team. Of Hasay and Erdmann, only one of them has to hit the “B” standard to bump Goucher off the team.

Looked back on her training and mentality coming into the meet, Goucher believes things were different when she was coached by Salazar...for the better.

“Alberto would always have me cover third place,” Goucher said. “Based on my training, (Jerry) felt that I could definitely run with Shalane and she would probably win, but I had an outside chance.”

Schumacher’s plan had Goucher running with Flanagan for just the first six to seven laps of the race, before taking off. Salazar calculated that race perfectly for Hasay and Erdmann to drop Hastings with a mile left to go and add to the unofficial team battle.

On the men’s side, Galen Rupp became the first man in history to win five United States 10,000-meter titles. Training partner Dathan Ritzenhein finished second to make his third national team heading to the IAAF World Championships for the 10,000-meter run.

Schumacher will send Chris Derrick to represent the United States for the first time on the track.

Another one of Schumacher’s athletes, Matt Tegenkamp, announced on Twitter that he was all-in for the 10,000-meter run as he prepares for his first fall marathon. He looked good until Ritzenhein picked up the pace. He will announce his marathon choice in the coming days and continue his training instead of racing on the track.

Meanwhile, everything is still on schedule for Ritzenhein to race on the track and run his fall marathon.

This is just the 10,000-meter run, but there are make-believe points scored elsewhere. Lopez Lomong and Matt Centrowitz won their respective heats in the men’s 1,500-meter run. Mary Cain and Treniere Moser added points by posting the two fastest times on the day in the women’s 1,500-meter run.

The battle continues on Saturday as Centrowitz and Lomong attempt to make the team heading to Moscow.
