Wisconsin Women's Team Preview: Friars first, then we ignore the rankings

In this day and age of not having to wait for the Sunday paper to see cross country results, people expect instantaneous information. Anything less is so prehistoric that you might as well send a fax or just deliver it via dinosaur.

The results from Wisconsin last year had a bit of a snafu. I think they had to use some finish line footage to figure out everyone’s final places.

The first thing we remember about last year’s race was that Arizona’s Elizabeth Apgar wasn’t included in the original results. We waited all day and eventually, Apgar was reinstated. The Arizona women finished third with 242 points, which was just ahead of Washington (252), Cornell (264), and an Emily Sisson-less Providence (265).

This year, all four of those teams are back, but things aren’t quite the same. There’ll still be a Pac-12 battle between Arizona and Washington, but Providence surely won’t be the last of the group. Cornell gets bumped out of the top four, but the question is by which team?

Just like in our predictions for the men’s race, we’ll breakdown the women’s field by giving you our top four “podium” teams, one dark horse, and then some info about every other ranked teams.

#1 Providence Friars

There’s not a lot to dislike about Providence. They’re lead by the best trio in the NCAA in Sisson, Laura Nagel, and Sarah Collins. What makes matters worse (for everyone else, that is) is that Sisson is finally healthy, Nagel has been progressing well, and Collins is “probably in better shape than she was this time last year.” They also have an “instant impact” freshman in Catarina Rocha.

Again, it's hard to find something to dislike. There is one glaring problem that may turn into a bigger issue this weekend: the lack of a fifth finisher.

At the Battle of Beantown, it was up to senior Erin Murphy to close the door for the Friars. She certainly has the talent to be the team’s anchor as she dropped her 5k PR from 17:04.39 to 16:32.06 last spring, but the gap between her and the team’s fourth may be even wider at a deeper race. Her 37th place finish in Boston may cause worry for the Friar's team score on Saturday.

However, if they can close, Providence should come away the victors.

#4 Washington Huskies

Right before we hit submit, we had a change of heart and moved Washington in front of Arizona. You’re supposed to go with your gut with these types of decisions, but we already have one foot on the UDub bandwagon.

Though putting four in the top ten at Bill Dellinger is impressive, it’s not their last performance that sold us. We think that they have the full-team-package, which is an uncommon commodity for teams at the top. While they don’t necessarily have the low-stick like Arizona’s Elvin Kibet, Washington makes it up with a a solid 1-2 in Amy Eloise-Neale and a healthy Katie Flood. Behind them is another strong frosh in Katie Knight, Maddie Meyers, and Eleanor Fulton.

Last year, Washington's top finisher placed just inside the top 30. Still, they just lost to Arizona by ten points and they had Kibet finish third overall. It’s hard to tell where Flood - who was Washington’s top finisher last year - and Eloise-Neale will place in Madison, WI, but expect their spread to be quite low.

Note: Historically, we don't like to put a lot of stock in freshmen. This year is a totally different story.

3 16:48 Amy-Eloise Neale WASHINGTON 153.3 Bill Dellinger
5 16:54 Katie Flood WASHINGTON 151.3 Bill Dellinger
9 17:06 Katie Knight WASHINGTON 147.3 Bill Dellinger
10 17:06 Maddie Meyers WASHINGTON 147.3 Bill Dellinger
13 17:18 Eleanor Fulton WASHINGTON 143.3 Bill Dellinger
25 17:40 Kaylee Flanagan WASHINGTON 136.0 Bill Dellinger
34 17:55 Baylee Mires WASHINGTON 131.0 Bill Dellinger
38 17:58 Erin Johnson WASHINGTON 130.0 Bill Dellinger
52 18:18 Megan Morgan WASHINGTON 123.3 Bill Dellinger

#3 Arizona Wildcats

With all of this talk about Washington, we don’t want to make it seem like the Wildcats won’t give them a challenge. Similar to Washington, Arizona placed four in the top ten at their big invitational (Roy Griak) a few weeks ago. Again, the depth of that race compared to what’s up next isn’t too comparable, but Arizona should at least place third again.

It’s another case of “the fifth finisher.” Maybe we should do some sort of profile on this sort of thing because it makes or breaks teams. Hanna Peterson has been solid for Arizona, but Washington should be able to squeeze in five before Arizona's fifth to make up for the lack of a frontrunner.

2 20:48.50 Elvin Kibet Arizona 155.4 Roy Griak

8 21:05.95 Maria Larsson Arizona 149.6 Roy Griak
27 21:38.80 Hanna Peterson Arizona 138.6 Roy Griak
35 21:51.40 Stephanie Bulder Arizona 134.4 Roy Griak

#7 New Mexico Lobos

The Lobos are the reigning Stachie at Nashies champions and currently hold the title for the “surprise of the season.” At Notre Dame, they challenged Florida State (who won with 77 points) and finished second with 82 points.

We'll just leave this here because it's arguably the best video on the website.

Harvard transfer Sammy Silva has been incredible for New Mexico so far this season and even the New Mexico Athletic Department agrees. Silva lead the way for the Lobos at Notre Dame, finishing third overall and a few seconds behind an always dangerous Colleen Quigley. Then they have six, maybe seven girls that can fill those last four scoring spots, which will be important at a race like Wisconsin.

35 17:47.9 TAMARA ARMOUSH NEW MEXICO 137.7 Notre Dame
94 18:24.3 KIRSTEN FOLLETT NEW MEXICO 125.6 Notre Dame
127 18:45.1 AMBER ZIMMERMAN NEW MEXICO 118.6 Notre Dame
157 19:03.7 ALICE WRIGHT NEW MEXICO 112.4 Notre Dame

The Dark Horse(s) - San Francisco, but wait, there’s more!

It wasn’t easy to pick one team to carefully watch. Apologies to Arkansas, who we originally selected to fit this category. The Razorbacks put eight in the top ten at Chile Peppers, so we’re very interested to see what’ll happen when they actually go up against some competition. We also leaned towards selecting the Michigan State women, who were a surprise at Roy Griak, finishing second behind Arizona with 72 points.

The team that may have the biggest upside may be San Francisco. Right behind MSU in the National Coaches’ Poll, the Dons ran very well at Notre Dame and finished 16 points behind New Mexico. Lead by a solid duo of Bridget Dahlberg and Eva Krchova, San Francisco posted a cool 34-second spread in South Bend.

7 17:14.3 BRIDGET DAHLBERG SAN FRANCISCO 148.9 Notre Dame
8 17:16.0 EVA KRCHOVA SAN FRANCISCO 148.3 Notre Dame
13 17:27.0 KATE JAMBORETZ SAN FRANCISCO 144.7 Notre Dame
32 17:45.6 ELENA BURKARD SAN FRANCISCO 138.5 Notre Dame
36 17:48.1 MAOR TIYOURI SAN FRANCISCO 137.6 Notre Dame
39 17:49.7 SOPHIE CURL SAN FRANCISCO 137.1 Notre Dame
64 17:58 Kailey Ulland SAN FRANCISCO 122.7 Sacramento
125 18:44.0 LILY ENGLEBREKT SAN FRANCISCO 119.0 Notre Dame
134 18:49.0 DARYL PHIL SAN FRANCISCO 117.3 Notre Dame
87 18:23 Ashley Moffett SAN FRANCISCO 114.3 Sacramento
108 18:50 Lauren Wilch SAN FRANCISCO 105.3 Sacramento
116 18:54 Elizabeth Schultz SAN FRANCISCO 104.0 Sacramento
119 18:59 Sophia Volk SAN FRANCISCO 102.3 Sacramento

They also have about six girls who could make up their top five, but I really enjoy odd couple characteristics of their fifth and sixth women. Maor Tiyouri, who finished fifth for the Dons at the ND Invite, is a 5’0” 10k specialist. Their next finisher, who was just a second behind Tiyouri, was Sophie Curl - a 5’8” miler. These are important things.

Also, they cracked the top ten in the National Coaches' Poll for the firsy time in program history. That has to count for something.
