Bekele and Farah rematch in London?
"I'll see you in London," were five words uttered by Mo Farah as he parted ways with Kenenisa Bekele after finishing second at the Great North Run in September.
Could a rematch be in order on April 13, 2014? Farah has already been confirmed as a headliner for the 2014 London Marathon, but it is still uncertain where Bekele will be making his debut at the 26.2 mile distance. On Monday morning, his official Facebook page posted the following message:
After his half-marathon victory, Bekele told reporters that he would like to be a part of the London Marathon if race organizers invite him. Former race director Dave Bedford and Deputy Race Director Hugh Brasher have managed to put together stacked fields for the London Marathon in recent years. A Farah and Bekele dual debut would most definitely bring fans out to support the double Olympic and World Champion against one of his toughest competitors.
Bekele beat Farah after he was left off the Ethiopian national team at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow. Although Farah was coming off a post-World Championship break, the British star's preparations for April's race already started as he rejoined the Oregon Project and coach Alberto Salazar for the transition to the marathon.
He recently posted this video on his Instagram page:
The 2013 London Marathon had Patrick Makau (WR holder at the time), Wilson Kipsang (WR holder - set after London), Geoffrey Mutai (fastest marathoner ever), Tsegaye Kebede (2012 Chicago Marathon champion) and Ayele Abshero (fastest debut marathoner) headlining. The 2014 elite class will be announced in January, but bringing back any or all of those five and adding Farah/Bekele may make it the marathon to watch in 2014.
