Mary Cain sets World Junior 1K Record
2013 World Championship finalist Mary Cain fell short of breaking the women’s indoor American 1,000-meter Record at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet on Thursday night. The 17-year-old ran 2:39.25 in the victory for a new World Junior Record. Teammate Treniere Moser finished in second place.
The American indoor record of 2:34.19 was set by Jen Toomey in 2004.
Cain's winning time is also No. 8 all-time for the U.S. indoor list.
Fawn Dorr was assigned pacing duties and took the leaders through 200, 400 and 600 behind the needed pace.
These were the splits for the leaders:
200-meters: 30.46
400-meters: 63.19
600-meters: 1:36.20
800-meters: 2:08
This was the first of seven American record attempts by Alberto Salazar’s Nike Oregon Project for this upcoming indoor season.
Cain opened her 2014 season with a 500-meter race at the Armory in New York City where she ran 1:12.43 and then followed up with a 2:08.51 in the 800-meter run 30 minutes later. Moser returned to competition for the first time since withdrawing from the IAAF World Championships with a hamstring tear.
Mitch Kastoff previewed Thursday night’s race by converting Toomey’s American record and breaking it down into an equivalent of 1:58.94 for 800-meters and 4:03.63 for the 1,500-meter run.
