This weekend's University of Washington Invitational is bringing in some of the most fascinating runners in the country on the high school, college and professional level. There should be some very intriguing matchups and openers this indoor season.
Women's Invitational 3k Preview | Men's Invitational 3k Preview | Men's mile Preview
The men's invite mile features the 2014 indoor debut of some very big names in the running world: Evan Jager (Nike),
German Fernandez (Nike), Jake Hurysz (Colorado) and Dan Huling (Nike). Along with the aforementioned athletes, Alan Webb will be attempting to work his mile season best down to the 4:00 minute mark in prep for Millrose. Luc Bruchet (British Columbia) is a bit of a dark horse here as he just recently ran 7:54.57 for 3k at the UW Indoor Preview a few weeks ago.
Based on the start list, I don't see anyone really touching Jager. His PR is 3:54.35 and unless we see a rebirth of Fernandez or something out of the blue happens (which occurs more often than not in track and field), he should be in the clear. I hope for Webb's sake that he can improve upon his season best of 4:02.81 from the UW Indoor Preview a few weeks ago. James Cameron of Washington is another sleeper pick as he is another sub-4 miler and will be running on his home surface.
Jake Hurysz of Colorado is coming off of an injury-laden XC season, but has yet to break the sub-4 barrier and apparently is fit as ever and will be looking to take seven seconds off of his 4:06.18 mile PR.
Ed. Note: Jager FTW, but watch out for Hurysz. Also, Fernandez is out.
