Chanelle Price makes history with gold

How many American women have won an 800-meter gold medal at an indoor or outdoor world championship? One.

On Sunday, Chanelle Price became the first to accomplish the feat with her world leading 2:00.09 in the final of the 2014 IAAF World Championships in Sopot, Poland. She took the lead from the gun and was never passed.

2014 marks an incredible comeback year for Price after a sub-par 2013 outdoor campaign. She is currently unsponsored.  Prior to the victory, Price’s lone accomplishment in a Team USA uniform was a 6th place finish in the 800-meter final at the 2007 World Youth Championships. Ato Boldon astutely noted on Twitter that Price’s perseverance should be commended.  After a year in which the United States had three women in the 800-meter final at the 2013 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Price appears ready to compete with the likes of Brenda Martinez during the outdoor season.
