Men's Field




Dejen Gebremeskel (Ethiopia)
Defending Champion. DJ has won the last 3 editions of the Carlsbad 5000. If he were to win for a fourth time the Dejen would be the first person to win the race 4 times. His best time is 13:11 which he set here when winning his first race in 2011. Dejen is the Olympic Silver medallist over 5000m and also has a bronze world championship medal. Dejen has run 12:46:81 for 5000m

Bernard Lagat (USA)
Bernard is one of the most decorated middle distance runners of all time. He has an impressive haul of 5 World Championship victories and a further 7 silver or bronze medals including the 2004 Olympic silver medal over 5000m. He has an incredible 11 national titles to his name and 6 American records to date.

Tariku Bekele (Ethiopia)
Tariku is the Olympic bronze medallist over 1000m from the Olympic Games in 2012. He was fourth here in 2012 running 13:16 which is his personal best. Over 5000m he has run 12:52:45.

Augustine Choge (Kenya)
Augustine was the 2012 World Indoor silver medalist over 3000m. He is a former world junior champion over 5000m and won the 2006 won the Commonwealth Games over 5000m.

Juan Luis Barrios (Mexico)
Juan Luis has finished 7th and 8th in the last 2 Olympic Games over 5000m his best time is 13:09:81. Juan Luis was 2nd here in 2007.

Edwin Kipyego (Kenya)
Edwin is here in the US running both Carlsbad and Cherry Blossom. Edwin was third at RnR Philadelphia last year running 60:04.

Will Leer (USA)
Has run PR’s for both 3000 and 1 mile and 1500m indoors this year. Will has a 5000m best of 13:36 which he set here last year.

Diego Estrada (Mexico)
Diego ran 13:38 for his personal best in San Jose in 2011. On the track he has a best of 13:15:33 which he set at Stanford last year. Diego represented Mexico at the World Championships last year.

Bobby Curtis (USA)
Bobby was third here in 2011 running 13:48 for his PR. Bobby was an NCAA Champion over 5000m.

DeSean Turner (USA)
DeSean was a member of Team USA World Championship team competing in the 3000m Steeplechase setting his PR last year of 8:25:56. This year he has already run to PR’s over the mile and 3000m indoors.  6-Time NCAA All-American while at Indiana University.

Mohamed Fadil (Morocco)
Moroccan Mohamed Fadil ran in the Shamrock Half Marathon last weekend finishing second.

Haron Lagat (Kenya)
Haron has a 13:26 5000m personal best. He has competed in Carlsbad on many occasions finishing 4th in 2008 and setting his best time of 13:36.

Zach Mayhew (USA)
3-Time NCAA All-American at Indiana University and 3 X Big 10 Champion. Zach has a 5000m 13:41:95 personal best set at Stanford last year.

Ben Bruce (USA)
Ben won the RnR New Orleans Marathon earlier this year in his debut. Ben has run 13:30.79 on the track and 13:58 on the roads over 5000m.

Frezer Legesse (USA)
University of Oklahoma graduate, NCAA All-American & Big Ten Champion. Competed in the 1500m at the 2013 US Championships and has Personal Bests of 3:57 (Mile) and 3:41 (1500m).

Diego Borrego (Mexico)
Diego’s best 5K was here in 2012 when he ran 13:49.

Christopher Sandovel (Mexico)
Christopher is predominately an 800m or 1500m specialist and has won the national championships over 800m in 2012.

Stephen Pifer (USA)
13:52 best mark set at the 2011 National Championships in Providence, RI.


Women's Field




Gotytom Gebreslase (Ethiopia)
Gotytom was fourth here last year. In 2011 she was the 3000m World Youth Champion. Her best and only 5km was here last year when she ran 15:32.

Gabe Grunewald (USA)
15:45 best set at the National Championships in 2012 her only road 5k to date. Gabe won the National Indoor Champs over 3000m in February and represented the USA at the World Indoors a few weeks ago. She has set 4 personal bests this year over 1500m, 3000m and two miles.

Jordan Hasay (USA)
Jordan is yet to run on the roads, her best 5000m was set back in 2011 when she posted 15:37:29, in the same year she was NCAA Indoor Champion over 3000m and one mile.

Julia Bleasdale (Great Britain)
Julia was 8th in both the 5000 and 10000m Olympic final at London 2012. Her best 5000m time is 15:02:00. In the same year Julia was 6th here in Carlsbad posting 15:47 for her personal best. Following this race she is racing Stanford where she hopes to run the Commonwealth Games qualifier.

Brenda Martinez (USA)
Brenda won the Bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships over 800m. Her best 5km was set here last year when she finished 5th in 15:44. 2012 Fifth Avenue Mile winner in 4:26:76 Three-time All-American and 2009 NCAA Runner-up over 1500m.

Margherita Magnani (Italy)
Margherita has set two personal bests indoors so far this year, the first 1000m is a national record of 2:39:94 and the second over 1500m posting 4:09:27. Margerita is yet to run over 5K but has a 9:00:25 3000m best set last year.

Lindsey Scherf (USA)
Best road 5km is 14:23 set at Frierhofer in 2012. This year she has PR’d over 10 miles just down the road in Encinitas. Six time NCAA Division I All-American and one of only two collegiate freshmen runners in 2004-2005 to earn All-American honors in all three running sports of cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track.

Alessandra Viola Giulia (USA)
Italian National Champion over 5000m with a best of 16:05:39.

Jen Rhines (USA)
Jen has represented the USA at 3 Olympic Games and has been to 5 World Championships competing over 5000m and 10000m. On the roads Jen has a personal best of 15:21 which she set when finishing second here in 2007.

Betsy Saina (Kenya)
Betsy was the 2012 African 10000m bronze medallist. She was also  NCAA Champion over XC, 10,000m and 5000m in 2012. Betsy has set PR’s this year over 3000m indoors and 10km on the roads. Her best 5km is 15:45 set in San Jose last year.over the mile and 3000m indoors.  6-Time NCAA All-American while at Indiana University.

Amy Van Alstine (USA)
Running for the Northern Arizona Elite Team based out of Flagstaff, Amy set the Arizona State Record for the Road 5k (15:50) at the Phoenix 10k in November. She ended the year with a second place finish at the U.S. Club Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon, earning a spot on Team USA at the BUPA Great Edinburgh XC race. She was also an NCAA Championship qualifier in cross country and was named the 2011 Atlantic 10 Athlete of the Year. Her 5,000m PR is 15.36.56.

Natasha La Beaud (USA)
Ran 16:18 here last year for her PR. Won first Junior National title and qualified for the World Junior Champs in Beijing in 2006. Won the Carlsbad Half Marathon in January. Natasha was a 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier and a graduate of Georgetown.

Katja Goldring (USA)
Katja is a UCLA graduate with dual Israeli-American citizenship. She was the 2011 and 2012 Track & Field Captain at UCLA. In 2009 she competed for the USA at the Junior World Cross Country Championships. Last year she set track PR of 16:33.
