THE FINALISTS

Laura Roesler - Oregon

Roesler has always been on the forefront of the middle-distance scene. Besides her signature event, the 800m, she has shined in the Oregon 4x4 for four seasons (winning three NCAA titles) and was a member of the 2014 NCAA Championship team that set the indoor collegiate record, en route to the team title. After finishing runner-up in the 800m during her 2013 campaign, Roesler made her final season as a duck one to remember, clocking a 2:01.32 for indoors (No. 2 all conditions all-time) and 2:00.52 for outdoors (No. 8 fastest collegiate in-season) and capturing both NCAA titles. Her indoor victory was won by 1.7 seconds, the largest margin of victory for 800m since 2001.

Courtney Okolo - Texas

Okolo made herself a name on the national scene when she ran 50.03 for 400m, a new collegiate record, en route to a Big 12 title. If that doesn’t impress you (although, hello, it should), she holds five NCAA Top 5 All-Time performances. Her 50.23 victory at the NCAA Outdoor Championships is No. 5 all-time, and was a member of three Texas 4x4s on the list (No. 2, 3:24.21 at NCAA Outdoors, No. 5, 3:25.05 at Penn Relays, and No. 3 3:27.42 at NCAA Indoors) Only a sophomore, she’s the first woman to split sub-50 at both the Penn Relays and NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Longhorns lost valuable relay member Briana Nelson to graduation, but add healthy Ashley Spencer, who was missing from their NCAA Outdoor title due to an injury suffered in the 400m. And with Okolo for two more seasons, they could ultimately own the outdoor collegiate record in 2015.

Sharika Nelvis, Arkansas State

Winning a national championship in the hurdles isn’t easy. Winning two is even harder, especially when you consider the vast differences in distance for both races. Nelvis won the 60mh and 100mh during her undefeated senior season at Arkansas State. A former NCAA qualifier in the 200m, 100m, and long jump, Nelvis won every 60m/100m hurdle contest she entered in 2014, winning both NCAA Championships with fantastic marks of 7.93 (altitude adjusted) and 12.52 (wind-aided). She racked up seven Sun Belt Conference Championships during indoor and outdoor, only finishing runner-up in the long jump during outdoor.
