Charles Jock wins the men's 800 at the Ponce Grand Prix in Puerto Rico

Charles Jock was the surprise winner tonight in the men’s 800m at the Ponce Grand Prix in Puerto Rico, beating out Nick Symmonds and Cas Loxsom to win in 1:45.40. Jock ran a very strong final 100 meters to overtake Rafith Rodriguez in the last stretch, recording his fastest time since 2013 and the 2nd best mark for an American in 2015.

Jock’s Oregon Track Club teammate Harun Abda was 4th in 1:46.33, followed by a trio of Brooks Beasts with Nick Symmonds 5th in 1:46.37, Mark Wieczorek 6th in 1:46.45, and Cas Loxsom 7th in 1:47:52. 
A surprising result came out of the women’s 800m, as 22-year-old Cuban Rose Mary Almanza ran a World-lead of 1:59.35 to beat fellow Cuban Sahily Diago, who was 2nd in 1:59.91. The time was a new PB for Almanza, who finished 4th at the 2010 World Junior Championships. American Ajee Wilson held the top time in the World until tonight’s race in Ponce. 


 
2013 World champion LaShawn Merritt looked flat once again in the men’s 400m, as he finished 2nd in 45.42 behind Trinidad & Tobago’s Machel Cedenio, who won in 44.97. Former Olympic and World champion Jeremy Wariner finished all the way back in 6th in 46.22.
 
In the women’s 1500, American Rachel Schneider dominated the final 200m to win in a new PB of 4:08.46. Former Florida Gator Cory McGee was 3rd in a season’s best of 4:12.64.
