Molly Huddle and David Torrence each claimed USATF 5K Road Championship titles at the CVS Health Downtown 5K Sunday morning in Providence, Rhode Island. The performance was Huddle’s fifth USATF 5K title of her career, and Torrence’s first ever USATF 5K Championship.

Huddle found herself in a familiar battle with two-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan, but ultimately emerged victorious by claiming yet another USATF 5K Road Championship.

Huddle ran her way to victory once again on the streets of Providence in a winning time of 15:12. Flanagan trailed for second in 15:17 while NCAA Champion-turned professional Emily Sisson claimed third in 15:48.

The victory was another step on the road to recovery from Huddle's heart-breaking finish at the World Championships when she celebrated too early and lost a podium spot to U.S. teammate Emily Infeld. Huddle finished fourth to Infeld’s third place by just 0.07 seconds.

Since the performance in Beijing, Huddle has been claiming victory after victory on the USATF road racing circuit, first with a win at the USATF 20K Championships on Sept. 7 in 1:06.27. Huddle’s 5K win Sunday in her hometown marked her fifth U.S. 5K victory of her career, and her second road 5K victory of 2015. She claimed the American record with a winning time of 14:50 at the B.A.A. 5K in April.
Torrence claimed the victory in a furious kick to the finish over two-time Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein and World Championship steeplechase finalist Dan Huling. Torrence broke the finish tape in 13:56 while Huling closed in 13:59 and Ritzenhein crossed the line for third in 14:03.

The performance marked a significant step in a series of standout performances this summer for Torrence. On Sept. 9, Torrence claimed the win at the inaugural Hoka One One Long Island Mile in 3:53. Days later, he followed the race with a sixth-place finish in 3:56 at the 5th Avenue Mile in New York City.

The next race on the USATF road racing circuit will be the USATF 10 Mile Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
