Following the World Anti-Doping Agency’s extensive report into systematic “state-sponsored” doping in Russia and the potential lifetime bans that could arise, Alysia Montano could retroactively receive multiple international medals

Should London Olympic Champion Mariya Savinova and bronze medalist Ekaterina Poistogova receive lifetime bans, the 29-year-old American 800m runner would receive a silver medal from the 2010 World Indoor Championships, a bronze medal from the 2011 World Outdoor Championships, a bronze medal from the 2012 London Olympics, and another bronze medal from the 2013 World Outdoor Championships.
After the news broke on Monday, Montano took to Periscope to voice her reaction on the effect the news would have on her career.

“I obviously feel very emotional about it because, you know, it’s something that a lot of us had known was going on in the sport for a really long time, but without any proof… you’re just basically pointing fingers,” Montano says in the video.

“It’s not just the medal… it’s about you putting out an honest effort, honest time and energy, and emotion. Being cheated out of it, you can’t ever get back those moments, you can’t ever replace those feelings that I would have been able to experience at the time.”

Professional athletes around the world have also reacted to the news in support of Montano running for a #cleansport against drug cheats.
