The third out of four High Performance meets at the House of Track in Portland went down on Friday night, with the marquee attraction being none other than brand new marathon man Galen Rupp.

A day after announcing his intention to make his 26.2 mile debut in just over two weeks at the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon, the 29-year-old cruised to an uncontested 7:57.39 3k win in what was essentially just a workout. Second place finisher Willie Milam was nearly 30 seconds behind Rupp.

Even though he’ll be coming back from a February 13th marathon, Rupp still plans on running at USA Indoors on March 11th and then World Indoors a week later if he was to qualify.

Even for a talent like Rupp, the thought of him finishing top three in Los Angeles then turning around less than a month later and placing top two in a deep U.S. 3k seems very ambitious, but that’s exactly why the attempt will be so much fun to watch.

In other action, 2015’s 800m breakout star Boris Berian ran an impressive 1:46.00 in his season debut, which puts him at #2 in the world right now behind Texas A&M super frosh Donavan Brazier. The time is 11th fastest in American history, but that’s not really a story since the 18-year-old Brazier ran 1:45.93 in just his first collegiate 800. Still though, Berian’s performance cuts more than 2.5 seconds off his indoor PR.

From unsponsored and owning a 1:48 PR to two 1:43s in the span of one season, the 23-year-old Berian was a tremendous story last year.

Berian’s Big Bear Track Club teammate and World Championship bronze medalist Brenda Martinez won the women’s mile in 4:32.05, soundly beating Nike Oregon Project’s Treniere Mosier who was second in 4:39.92. Moser was doubling back from the 800 just 45 minutes earlier.
