At the start the race had 166 men and 202 women lined up at the start. Temperatures were reported at 66 degrees and 50% humidity. This is about 15 degrees cooler than forecasts earlier this week.

As the 2nd mile was clicked off, Nick Arciniaga running for Under Armor has taken a slight lead. He looks smooth but obviously still early. Meb, Diego Estrada and Tyler McCandless hung close with the rest of the field just behind.

Meb leading the pack at 3 miles in an unofficial time of 15:13, 5:00 last mile. Ritz is off to the right in front of Matt Llano. Puskedra is in the back of the lead back and Rupp is tucked in the middle of the group. 5k is passed in 15:48 with Fernando Cabada taking the lead. Women are off!

Fernando Cabada still leads by about 2-3 seconds. There are about 25-30 men in the main pack behind him. Looks like all the main players are still in the mix.

McCandless continues to lead. Tim Ritchie and Jared Ward of Saucony are close to the front with Estrada and Ritz. They pass through a water station and 10k in 31:34.

Moves are starting to be made! Elkanah Kibet and Sam Chelanga open things up a bit. Rupp has moved into 4th behind Ritchie to cover the move. Jon Grey of adidas, Ritz, Matt Llano of NAZ Elite/Hoke and Tyler Pennell of Zap Fitness all there. Soon after through the drink station Rupp takes the lead but settles back into the pack soon after.null

Not too much happening other than athletes like Diego Estrada and Meb sharing their water through the drink station with their competitors. We love the sportsmanship! It's a battle out there and the athletes respect one another. Ritz takes the lead soon after the 10 mile mark as they go back through the USC Campus.

Tim Ritchie, the BC grad, now leading the pack next to Ritz. This mile marks the slowest of the race to this point. Soon after Ritz and Matt Llano accelerate into the drink station, Meb sits in the 4th. 1:03:02 at 20k, 15:50 last 5k. Temperature at 73 degrees, 37% humidity.

The men pass through 13 miles in 1:05:58 and 20 men remain in the lead pack. One of the pre-race top 10 favorites, Bobby Curtis, sits in about 22nd and off the lead pack. WCAP athletes Paul Katan Augustus Mayio and Elkanah Kibet still with the leaders.

Meb now takes the lead as they pass mile 14. The pace slows again and the three athletes off the leaders are now catching up slightly, those athletes are teammates Bobby Curtis and Jake Riley from Hansons-Brooks.

Tyler Pennel of Zap Fitness takes the lead into drink station, Rupp and Ward a few steps behind him. Meb just behind them to their right shoulder

After the 25k in 1:18:55, Pennel takes off even more and opens up a 4-5 second lead. Pack is breaking up. Rupp in 2nd, Meb 3rd, Ritz 13th.

Rupp and Meb have caught Pennel. Biwott has tried to move as well and sits in 4th. This is the first major shake up of this race. Still a long way to go, but Ritz and Puskedra are no where in sight.

It's been the fastest mile of the race with Pennel, Meb and Rupp now working together. Ward has moved into 4th with Matt Llano passing Biwott for the top 5. Ward is about 8 seconds back.

Meb and Rupp are the front runners, but the 3rd place story is Jared Ward. NO ONE IN SIGHT! Unofficially 9:49 last two miles for the leaders. Meb/Rupp up 40 seconds on Ward.

Meb and Galen his mile 22 and with 4 miles to go GALEN MAKES HIS MOVE!! Meb is not responding, but well ahead of Jared Ward in 3rd. Ward is 24 seconds ahead of the 4th place competitor. Temperature 75 degrees, 34% humidity

Rupp has run approximately 9:41 for his last two miles and no one is in sight. With three miles to go it looks relatively safe to say that Rupp will win his debut marathon, make his first US Marathon Olympic team and will take home $80,000 for the win.

Rupp remains in cruise control. The top four are still in tact, Rupp-Meb-Ward-Pennel....but just after this image they announce that Luke Puskedra moves into 4th at 2:02 into this race, although they say it's big gap behind Ward. Temperature 75 degrees, 44% humidity.

Meb is 50 seconds behind Galen Rupp (pic below), Puskedra is about 60 seconds behind Ward. Only minutes to go until Rupp starts the talk of him being the next great American Marathoner. The first debut marathoner to win the Trials was George Young in 1968.

Finish Actual Finish: 2:11:12 GALEN RUPP WINS in 2:11:11 unofficially! Meb finishes about 60 seconds back in 2nd and it's JARED WARD making his first Olympic Team finishing in under 2:13 once again in LA!
