The Brown family grew from two to three on Friday morning as Sarah Brown gave birth to a baby girl named Abigail Ann Brown.

The news was announced by Sarah’s husband and coach Darren, a former Texas All American, on his Twitter account, which reads: “Welcome to the world Abigail Ann Brown! 5lb. 15oz and 21” of pure grit & fight. Mom & baby girl are doing great.”

Sarah, a top American middle-distance runner, made the surprise announcement that she was pregnant last September. She also announced that she would continue to train with the hope of making the 2016 Olympic team despite her due date being three months before the Trials. Under the supervision of her doctors and coach Darren, Sarah has continued to train successfully throughout her pregnancy.

A change in training regimen, more cross-training, jump rope, fast footwork and swimming, has helped Brown maintain a level of fitness while pregnant in her training. As reported in a feature in People, Darren as her husband and coach has also created a constant support system during the whole process.

“These are not two things that you’d normally go after at the same time,” Sarah said. “To do both is a big feat. I don’t even know if I’d be going after this if it wasn’t for having that kind of support system in place.”

Even when Sarah first heard the news of her pregnancy last fall during an Olympic year, she maintained that the goal of competing in Rio was still her dream.

“I mean if the odds can be so stacked against me getting pregnant and yet I still manage to find a way, then who’s to say that I can’t beat the odds again,” Sarah wrote in her blog last Sept.

In her blog, Sarah wrote that she was surprised to learn that she was pregnant because she had been using an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control, but maintained that her dream of making an Olympic team was still motivated.

“I already have the Olympic standard and am qualified for the Trials in 2016. This alone is enough motivation to get to the line ready to compete for a spot on the toughest team in the world to make. Only this time, I will have one more fan cheering me on,” Sarah wrote.

With Abigail born 17 days before her due date, Sarah now has almost four full months to get herself ready for the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. in July. She will also have an additional fourth-month old fan cheering her on the whole way.
