The Kenyan marathon team set to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games was announced Tuesday by Athletics Kenya, which gave spots to Eliud Kipchoge, Stanley Biwott, Wesley Korir, Heleh Kiprop, Jemima Sumgong, and Visiline Jepkesho to compete on the men’s and women’s squad. Mary Keitany and Florence Kiplagat will act as reserves for the women’s team while Bernard Kipyego and Cyprian Kotut will be reserves on the men’s side.

Surprisingly, marathon world-record holder Dennis Kimetto and the second-fastest woman ever — Mary Keitany are not included on the team. Kimetto as well as former world record-holder Wilson Kipsang dropped out of consideration last week, citing anticipated heat and humidity in Rio. Both Kimetto and Kipsang were forced to drop out of the 2015 World Championships in Beijing last summer due to the hot, humid conditions. Keitany remains on the team as a reserve, but is returning from a disappointing ninth-place at the London Marathon in April.

Kipchoge and Sumgong have been in the preliminary conversations for the Olympic team since their breakthrough winning performances at the London Marathon. Kipchoge ran 2:03:05 to claim the victory in a course record and world-leading time by over a minute. Sumgong won the women’s race in a season’s best of 2:22:58, despite falling early on in the course.

Rio will mark Kipchoge’s third Olympic team after earning bronze in the 5K in 2004 Athens and silver in the 5K in 2008 Beijing. He failed to make the 10K Olympic team in 2012, which forced him to switch specialties to the marathon. Since training for the marathon, Kipchoge has won all but one race and most recently claimed victories in London 2016, Berlin 2015, and London 2015.

“I really need that thing [Olympic gold],” Kipchoge told Reuters. “I am fit and I will train normally because I have to remain fit now and everything will fall in place.”

His teammates — Biwott and Korir are returning from successful 2016 seasons. Biwott finished runner-up at the London Marathon in a personal best of 2:03:51. 2012 Boston Marathon winner Korir is returning from a fourth-place finish at this year's Boston Marathon.

Sumgong finished fourth overall at the World Championships in Beijing last summer, and has since finished sixth overall at the RAK International Half Marathon in a personal best of 66:58. She also collected a fourth-place finish at the 2014 Boston Marathon and a runner-up finish at the 2014 New York City Marathon.

Her teammates, Kiprop and and Jepkesho each won the 2016 Tokyo and Paris Marathons, respectively. Kiprop earned a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. Jepkesho finished 20th overall at the World Championships last summer.

Kiplagat, who will act as a reserve, is returning from a third-place finish at the London Marathon, a 2015 Chicago Marathon victory and a fifth-place finish at the 2015 London Marathon.
