A retested “A” sample from the 2008 Olympic Games of Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter has reportedly come back positive for a banned substance, according to a Friday report by the Jamaica Gleaner.
At a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) retested 31 “B” samples from athletes who competed at the Beijing Games. As a result of the "A" sample test, Carter could now face up to an 18-month suspension if the stimulant Methylexaneamine is confirmed by his “B” sample results.
Methylexaneamine is listed as a "specified stimulant" and is currently on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited stimulants.
Carter won Olympic gold medals as part of Jamaica’s 2008 and 2012 4x100m relay teams. He also contributed to Jamaica’s 2011, 2013, and 2015 4x100m World Championship titles. His most recent individual medal came at the 2013 World Championships where he took bronze in the 100m. He has not competed in 2016 due to a reported foot injury.
If Carter’s “B” sample tests positive, the Jamaican relay teams could potentially lose their world and Olympic gold medals should the IOC choose to strip the team of their awards, which would greatly impact world record-holder Usain Bolt's medal tally.
The Jamaica Olympic Association and Carter’s agent Adrian Laidlaw have not responded for comment regarding the reports.
