Women's 800 Final: Quick Takes and Picks
The women's Olympic Trials 800 meter final tonight at 5:42 local time (8:42 Eastern) is outrageously loaded. Below, our writers try to make sense of who will be heading to Rio.

Taylor Dutch: In my opinion, the women’s 800m is the hardest team to make at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which makes this task of predicting an order almost impossible. But I am giving my “hot take” as Dennis would say, and giving the win to Alysia Montano.

I know what you’re thinking — “Of course she would pick Alysia. Taylor went to Cal. Classic.”

But hear me out. For the past eight years, Alysia has made nearly every international team she has competed for and won seven, SEVEN national titles.

A lot of people counted her out of last year’s championship. In 2014, Alysia competed at USAs while eight months pregnant and spent the entire 2014-2015 season getting her body back to race shape in time to compete for a spot on the 2015 World Championship team. The day of the final came and there she was, a year after giving birth to her daughter, winning her seventh U.S. title.

Alysia is quite literally a pro at making teams, and I think today will be no exception.

Meg Bellino: I feel a little crazy writing this down, but I’m not picking Alysia Montano, a 5x U.S. outdoor champion, to make the Olympic team. Why? Because Ajee Wilson and Brenda Martinez looked outstanding in the prelim and semi and Kate Grace has been lighting up the track over the final 150m each round. Grace’s biggest obstacle will be navigating through traffic, as she’s been popping out into lane 2 to get around the fields and utilizing her killer wheels at the end. If she’s within reach of the leaders and not stuck in the back with 200m to go, she’s got a great shot.

Allie Woodward: Ajee Wilson will walk away with the win today in the women’s 800m. In addition to her PB 1:57.67 being faster than anyone else in the field Ajee tends to position herself well in the closing 100 meters and has a stronger kick than Kate and Brenda who will finish two and three respectively. Those who didn’t watch Grace cruise through her semi might think she’s a risky pick for second. The  fastest time she’s clocked this year in the 800 is 2:00.05 but she’s ready to run faster. The confidence and strength she’s exuded thus far at these Olympic Trials make her a shoo-in for Team USA. Rounding out my top three is another woman who dabbles in the 1500m range quite often, Brenda Martinez. B-Mart just ran a season’s best in the semifinals Friday (1:59.64) and has been consistently flirting with the 2:00 mark and below in the event for the entire year.

Dennis Young: Six women have looked Olympian in the rounds: automatic qualifiers Ajee Wilson, Brenda Martinez, Alysia Montaño, Molly Ludlow, Chrishuna Williams, and Kate Grace. I'm knocking out time qualifiers Phoebe Wright and Raevyn Rogers--two of the greatest collegiate 800m runners of all time--because they couldn't finish top three in their semi heats. If Wright makes the team, though, it will be the greatest athletic achievement in blogger history.

There are six runners good enough for three spots. I have no idea how that will shake out. I love the way that Grace and Williams have been in complete control, doing the bare minimum to automatically qualify out of each round. Beyond that, who the hell knows? Any permutation of Wilson, Martinez, Montaño, Ludlow, Williams, and Grace is possible. There's some expert analysis for you.
