Syracuse's Justyn Knight broke the Virginia Panorama Farms course record held by his former teammate Martin Hehir, and BYU's men and women took surprising wins over higher-ranked teams. Knight broke the 8K course record with a furious last 2K, and walked down Campbell's Lawrence Kipkoech to win 23:13 to 23:29.

Without potential No. 5 man Joel Hubbard, the defending national champs lost 39-44 to No. 14 BYU. FloTrack's Gordon Mack, who is on-site, said Syracuse coach told Hubbard to drop out two miles into the race.

COMPLETE RESULTS

The Orange aren't the only team with a large question mark in their top five, though. No. 1 Stanford was fifth with 139 points today. Even if Sean McGorty and Grant Fisher went 1-2, by my count, the team scoring would have gone BYU 49, Syracuse 54, Stanford 59.

No. 12 Virginia was third with 82 points.

BYU won it with four men in the top nine. Nicolas Montanez and Clayton Young were fourth and fifth, and Jonathan Harper and Rory Linkletter were eighth and ninth.

In the women's 5K, William & Mary's Regan Rome beat out Coastal Carolina's Annie Bothma 17:01-17:04. Barefoot-running Bothma continued her comeback in a Coastal Carolina uniform after running exactly one race for Boise State last year: a third-place finish ahead of a bunch of big names at Roy Griak.

The No. 25 BYU women dominated the field, and scored 47 points ahead of Southern Methodist's 89 and No. 19 Syracuse's 98. Yesenia Silva and Erica Birk led the way in fourth and fifth for BYU, and it seems like Syracuse ran its full lineup. SMU may have scored key Kolas points, as Syracuse and fourth-place Virginia are very possible automatic NCAA qualifiers.
