Anna Rohrer Shines At Home, Providence Women Prove They Are GOOD

On home turf, No. 5 Anna Rohrer of Notre Dame won the Joe Piane XC Invitational in South Bend with a time of 16:11.7 for 5K.

The sophomore All-American defeated No. 4 Alice Wright of New Mexico by over four seconds.

Rohrer's season debut marked her first major collegiate victory. She shaved 35 seconds off her time at this meet last year and improved seven places. New Mexico's Wright and No. 12 Calli Thackery raced alongside Rohrer through 3K. Thackery fell off over the next kilometer leaving Wright, Rohrer and Bethan Knights of Cal remaining. Rohrer's time of 16:11 was 11 seconds faster than 2015 winner, Ryen Frazier of NC State.

The No. 2 Providence women won the team title, scoring 117 points. No. 16 Sarah Collins (ninth), Millie Paladino (24th), Brianna Ilarda (26th), Abbey Wheeler (28th) and Katie Lembo (30th) put all scorers in the top 30 to defeat No. 3 NC State (149 points) and unranked Eastern Michigan (159).

The scary thing about Providence? They still have yet to insert returning All-Americans Catarina Rocha and Samantha Jones into their line-up.

NC State performed well considering they held out sisters Wesley and Ryen Frazer. Led by Erika Kemp's eighth-place finish, Rachel Koon (27th), Megan Moye (31st), Alyssa Rudawsky (39th), and Elly Henes (44th) scored for the Wolfpack.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles defeated several Saucony Flo50 ranked teams (No. 4 New Mexico, No. 14 Notre Dame, No. 23 Weber State) with 159 over the defending NCAA champion Lobos (166). Jordann McDermitt (seventh) and Natalie Cizmas (12th) paced EMU, who has only qualified for the NCAA Championships once, in 1996.

Besides great performances from Wright and Thackery, the Lobos didn't give us much to hope for, unfortunately. Sophie Connor was 37th, with Alex Buck (60th) and Natasha Bernal (62nd) rounding out the scorers. Maybe this fast of a 5K isn't what suits the Lobos right now and our minds will be completely changed at Wisconsin in two weeks. If not, unranked Utah competes in the same NCAA regional as New Mexico and was only five points behind today. Watch out!

Sean Tobin Stuns To Lead Mississippi To Victory Over No. 11 Eastern Kentucky, No. 20 UTEP

Mississippi junior Sean Tobin made a massive move over No. 9 Jonah Koech and the rest of the field to win the 5 Mile race in 23:31 over Sam Parsons of NC State (23:34).

The UTEP Miners looked solid through 7K of the race, leading the team battle through every split. Through 5K, Koech was leading over Antibahs Kosgei of Alabama and Amos Kosgey of No. 11 Eastern Kentucky, and the Miners had four athletes in the top 13. Tobin moved hard around 7K and the next split revealed Mississippi over UTEP by nine points. The Miners maintained a 31-second spread between their five scorers, but their back half lost ground over the Rebels.

Mississippi scored 83 points to defeat UTEP (99) and Eastern Kentucky (168). After Tobin's victory, MJ Erb (fourth, after losing his shoe during the race), Robert Domanic (14th), Wes Gallagher (24th), and Mark Robertson (40th) paced the Rebels.

Koech fell to fifth-place behind Tobin, Parsons, Robert Brandt of Cal and Erb. Unranked Providence was fourth, Illinois fifth and Southern Utah sixth, just two points ahead of No. 22 Washington State.
