In a teleconference five days before the New York City Marathon, Olympic triathlon gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen said that she's mostly stuck with familiar training since the Rio Games. During triathlon training, Jorgensen said that she ran 50 to 70 kilometers (30-45 miles) a week in six to nine sessions. She said that she's since bumped that to 70-80km (45-50 miles) a week.

She also said that the month after the ITU World Triathlon Championships in September featured a weekly workout that was 3x7K. Jorgensen has competed twice since finishing a surprising second at worlds: a stunning 53:13 10-mile run in Minnesota three weeks ago, which she said left her "incredibly surprised," and a three-day non-draft-legal triathlon in the Bahamas ​this past weekend​.

When asked if she planned to compete in triathlons in 2017 and 2020, Jorgensen said that her immediate hope was to start a family and that "the goalie is out." But she cited Kara Goucher and professional triathlete Nicola Spirig (who took silver in the triathlon in Rio) as models for having a child, taking a year off, and returning to elite athletics.

Jorgensen also said that she's consulted with Goucher and Shalane Flanagan on social media, and they advised her to not drink too much coffee on race day.

The 30-year-old is widely considered one of the greatest triathletes of all time. She won 13 straight World Triathlon Series events from 2014 to 2016, amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money and breaking the previous record for longest streak by 10 wins.
