In a dominant performance, Kate Murphy opened her indoor season with 9:14.12 for 3K at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games on Saturday morning. Murphy earned the victory in a solo effort as the rest of the field finished almost 30 seconds later. The time makes Murphy the No. 3 indoor performer in prep history behind Mary Cain (9:04.51) and Alexa Efraimson (9:00.16 on an oversized track), per Track and Field News.

The mark would have placed 10th at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.

The Lake Braddock distance runner lit the track on fire in 2016 when she blasted a personal best of 4:07 for 1500m and qualified to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials. As a 16-year-old, Murphy placed ninth in the semifinal of the national championship.

Saturday's 3K performance is the longest indoor distance Murphy has run since her sophomore year of high school.  But she raced the 3K several times during the 2016 outdoor season, highlighted by a personal best of 9:10 in her victory at the USATF Junior Championships in June. She went on to compete for Team USA at the World Junior Championships where she placed 12th overall.

Murphy committed to run for the University of Oregon in the fall.
