A Scientific Breakdown Of The Track Olympians' Appearance On The Bachelor
My two worlds collided on primetime television last night when an episode of America's favorite show, The Bachelor, featured track stars Carl Lewis, Allyson Felix, and Michelle Carter.

Bachelor Nick Viall (view his MileSplit profile!) says that track is something he's done his whole life. He was a high school state champion in Wisconsin (and teammates with track superfan Derek Rubis!), per Sports Illustrated. He went on to run on some of UW-Milwaukee's fastest 4x4 and 4x8 teams and was a member of the 2002 Horizon League 4x4 championship squad.

"Track is a very unforgiving sport," Viall said on last night's episode.

And unforgiving it was to most of the women during the group date. If you don't watch the show, a group date is where a number of women go on a "date" that is actually an obscure activity that pits the women against each other, because obviously they want alone time with Nick, which is usually the end goal of a group date.

The alone time last night at the track was a solo hot tub session. If you're thinking that's odd, it's because it was.

Last night was the "Nick-athlon." They competed in the long jump, high jump, and the javelin. It wasn't pretty, and most of them definitely dressed for an athleisure photo shoot and not track practice, but it was amusing. I've run track since eighth grade, watched The Bachelor franchise for over five years now, and write for a track and field website. OF COURSE I LOVED THIS.

Lewis, Felix, and Carter narrowed the field to the top three contestants, who then competed in one final long sprint. This sprint had an oversized, tacky ring trophy at the end, which obviously symbolized marrying Nick? Obviously. What transpired was hilarious.

Thoughts I had while watching this segment on The Bachelor:

"Nick has decent form."
"There's no way this girl knows who Carl Lewis, Allyson Felix, and Michelle Carter are."**
"I don't think these girls dressed appropriately for this much physical activity."
"I would FOR SURE strain something in my arm throwing that jav."
"These women would think I'm a track fraud. There's no way I would be able to do any of these events."
"I like Rachel's top."

"The aspiring dolphin trainer is shockingly athletic."
"I wonder how much ABC paid Carl, Allyson, and Michelle to do this?"
"This was a fluid stop during a marathon GONE WRONG."

**Contestant Rachel is a lawyer from Dallas, who graduated from the University of Texas in 2007. She majored in sports management and kinesiology and appeared to have worked in the athletics communications office, per LinkedIn. Michelle Carter was a student-athlete at Texas from 2003-2007. They may have actually known each other back then? The video below shows her face light up and hug Carter upon her entrance. What a time to be alive.
