UPDATE: Cheserek is in Boston and gunning for the 3:52.88 collegiate record. The race is at 3:10 PM Eastern, live on FloTrack.

Two nuggets as conference week entries trickle out: Edward Cheserek is entered in the mile at the Boston University Last Chance meet, and according to a press release Oregon sent out this morning, he's not entered in any individual events at the MPSF Indoor Championships. (Both the BU Last Chance and MPSF Champs are live on Flotrack. The BU men's mile is Sunday at 3:10 PM Eastern.)

The fact that Cheserek is even entered in another meet the weekend of MPSF is a big deal. Oregon may run a DMR at MPSF, but as of now, the only individual event Cheserek is running this weekend is in Boston. (Oregon is currently sitting at No. 8 in the DMR and would presumably only use Ches this weekend on a relay if they got bumped close to the NCAA qualifying bubble.) Cheserek, despite his 15 NCAA titles, has never broken a collegiate record. Earlier this season, he ran a casual 3:54 1600m split in a DMR the day before running a 7:45 3K. At last year's NCAA meet, he split 3:52 for 1600m on the anchor of the winning Oregon DMR just 30 minutes after running a 13:47 5K:

With NCAAs taken up by a likely triple focused on points, this is Cheserek's last chance at running a fast time indoors as a collegian.

The CR in the men's mile is 3:52.88, held by Lawi Lalang, whose 5K win over Cheserek in 2014 is one of the best races of the King Ches era:

Lalang ran that 3:52 at the Millrose Games in 2014, the third year in a row that the men's mile record went down at Millrose. (Miles Batty ran 3:54.54 in 2012 and Chris O'Hare ran 3:52.98 in 2013.) Can Ches run that fast? The race will be rabbited and he'll get to mix it up with pros Kyle Merber, Colby Alexander, Johnny Gregorek, Drew Hunter, and more. Merber has the fastest indoor PR in the field at 3:54.67, and Cheserek's indoor PR is 3:56.43, from a race two years ago where he beat Lalang and Merber.

Both of those are a long way from 3:52 high. However, Cheserek has run 3:36.5 for 1500m outdoors, which converts to 3:53.76 for a full mile. But again, he split 3:52 for 1600m half an hour after racing a 5K last year.

He can do it.
