Former Olympic Champion Asli Cakir Alptekin Banned For Life
2012 Olympic 1500m champion Asli Cakir Alptekin has been banned for life from track and field after her third doping offense.
Asli Cakir Alptekin of Turkey has been convicted of her third doping offense and was subsequently issued a lifetime ban from the sport of track and field by the Turkish athletics federation.
The disgraced track star already had her 2012 Olympic and European gold medals in the women's 1500m stripped in 2015 after investigation into her 2013 blood tests results showed abnormalities in her biological passport. She initially received an eight-year ban, but this was later reduced to four years after she agreed to cooperate with anti-doping authorites. The ban was backdated to 2013, and the 32-year-old was thus eligible to compete again this year.
Her only race in 2017 was an 11th-place finish at the European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country event, which helped her club win the team title.
Alptekin's first positive test was in 2004 as a 19-year-old at the IAAF World Junior Championships. She served a two-year ban for her first offense.
Turkey's athletics federation did not reveal the details of her latest and final offense.
