Penn Relays Qualifying Standards For 2024: Here's What To Know

Here are the qualifying standards for the 2024 Penn Relays, taking place at Franklin Field starting April 25.

In the world of track and field, there often are sets of pre-determined standards athletes must have achieved in order to be eligible to compete in certain competitions, earn scholarships, etc.

The standards vary for each event, meet or level of competition and typically are determined based on the number of athletes there would be space for based on the schedule, number of heats/lanes available at the facility, spots on the team and other related factors.

The use of standards is something that happens globally, from collegiate events to the World Championships and Olympics.

For the 2024 Penn Relays presented by Toyota, scheduled for April 25-27 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, standards have been set and published for individuals and relay teams to help determine who will be among the 15,000 high school, college, pro and masters competitors permitted to enter.

The Penn Relays has a rich history and tradition that began in 1895, and while it is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the country, much of the prestige revolves around the best of the best at each level showcasing their skills for more than 100,000 spectators. 

Therefore, having standards ensures a high level of competition and balanced fields in each event and category. 

Collegiate relay teams and individuals should only enter if they are capable of achieving the set standards of the Penn Relays. 

For high school athletes, the standards must have been achieved during the 2024 season, with the exception of discus and javelin, which also could’ve been reached in 2023. Additionally, they must have been achieved at meets with at least five participating high schools.

Note: Achieving the standards does not automatically guarantee entry into the Penn Relays, nor does not meeting the standard disqualify athletes from consideration if more people/teams are needed to fill the field in one of the more than 400 separate events.
