Day 3 Updates At The UIL Texas Track And Field State Meet

AUSTIN -- We're set for the final day of action at the UIL Texas State Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and it's fixin' to be a doozy.

With Class 1A and Class 6A performances on tap for Saturday at Mike Myers Stadium, we'll close out the regular season in Texas and conclude what's been an epic year from across the state.

Today's schedule will include performances from a selection of the top teams in the country, including the Atascocita boys, the Duncanville girls and boys, Katy Tompkins and several other top-rated programs.

Individually, we could see the stars align with Class 6A stars Jelani Watkins and Jayden Keys, San Juanita Leal, Nicole Humphries and Faith Franklin, along with performances from Class 1A legend Taytum Goodman and many more.

A Perfect Move With 100 Meters To Go In The Boys 3,200m Final

Bridgeland's Benjamin Montgomery never until the final meters on Saturday in the boys 3,200m final.

Instead, he worked off Southlake Carroll's Caden Leonard, who pushed the pace early, carrying the first half into a 4:28.70.

But it was there that Montgomery latched on, riding off Leonard's shoulder until the very end and until the final straightaway, where he then went wide and turned up for a finishing kick that brought him home with the win in 8:51.50.

Leonard was second in 8:51.57 while Southlake Carroll's Zach Troutman was third in 8:51.64.

An Emphatic Break Away In The Final 3,200 Meters In Class 6A

San Juanita Leal looked, acted and executed like a returning state champion on Saturday, negative-splitting the final 1,600m of her 3,200m final in 4:58 to win in 10:02.10.

The Edinburg North senior and Texas A&M signee took what was a tight-knit race over 1,600m and broke it open in a flash just into the midway point, moving away from second-place Macy Wingard by four seconds at 2,000 meters.

She didn't look back from there, closing over her final 400 meters in 73 seconds. Wingard was second in 10:17.71, while El Paso Eastwood was third in 10:23.76.

A Final Flurry In The Last 800 Meters In Class 1A

A tactical race over six laps moved to a sprint finish over the last two frames.

The Class 1A 3,200m final came down to two runners, and ultimately it was Ackerly Sands senior Wiley Gaskins who timed things perfectly to win his first state title in 9:45.33.

He was just over a tenth faster than Comstock's Sebastian Talamantez, who entered with the fastest seed time and the only one under 10 minutes.

Cumby Miller Grove's Ryker Haivala was the third and final runner under 10 minutes, finishing third in 9:53.97.

The 1A Legend Has Begun Her Final Day Of Action

Over the last four years, Springlake Earth's Taytum Goodman has been dominating her state classification across distances.

Before Saturday, she had picked up seven wins at the UIL State Class 1A Championships in the 800m, 1,600m and 3,200m.

She began her final affair at state on Saturday with a fast first lap before settling into a rhythm and earning her second straight title at 3,200m, posting a winning time of 11:04.68 seconds.

Goodman was just eight seconds off her class record from 2023. She will follow with two more efforts in the 800m and 1,600m, with hopes of ending her high school career with 10 state titles.
