Former Mississippi State sprinter and Canadian Olympian Daundre Barnaby died on Friday in St. Kitts, an island in the West Indies.
According to Athletics Canada, Barnaby drowned in a swimming accident at a national team training camp off the coast of the Caribbean island. The report said he lost his footing and was dragged underneath the waves by the undertow. Barnaby’s body was discovered hours after his disappearance.
He was 24.
“This is such a sad and profound loss,” said Athletics Canada CEO Rob Guy, in a statement. “Daundre was an outstanding athlete and an even better young man.”
Barnaby was from Brampton, Ontario in Canada. He competed for Team Canada in the 2012 London Olympics in the 400m.
